The Toronto Blue Jays have put catcher/designated hitter Alejandro Kirk on the 10-day injured list. Kirk got a cut on his left hand that he’s trying to bandage up. In addition, the Toronto Blue Jays sent Bowden Francis to Buffalo of the International League’s Triple-A, bringing backstop Tyler Heineman and relieving pitcher Trent Thornton to take Francis’ place on the active roster.
During yesterday’s game against the Rangers, Kirk was hit in the hand by a fastball thrown by Jon Gray. After his departure, Danny Jansen took over behind the plate for the remainder of the game. Despite the fact that x-rays taken after the game did not reveal any fractures, Kirk will still need at least a week and a half to recover from his injuries. It puts an end to what has been an offensively uncharacteristically average season for the right-handed batter. The ship is taking a hit.253/.337/.331 in 202 at-bats over the course of the season.
He got off to a strong start, posting a batting line of.274/.418/.387 through the first month of the season. He has only managed to post a.241/.285/.302 slash line over the course of the past month and a half. Jansen, on the other hand, has been heading in the opposite direction, and he’ll be the one to catch the majority of the games while Kirk is sidelined. He had a slash line of.179/.246/.375 through the first month and a half of the season, but since May 1 he has posted a mark of.235/.286/.506, indicating that he has found his power stroke.
On the 40-man roster, Heineman is the only other catcher besides the starter. For the time being, he will serve as the backup for Jansen. Since the end of April, when Toronto acquired him from the Pirates, he has appeared six times in the Major League Baseball.
