All you need to know about what happened to New York Yankees ace Frankie Montas ahead of the 2023 Spring Training.

According to the announcement made by the pitching coach for the Yankees, Matt Blake, at Yankees camp this morning, right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas is now having tests on his right shoulder and may require surgery to treat the problem.

Blake stated that the surgery that is being considered would “not necessarily” bring an end to Montas’ season; but, the mere potential of the operation indicates a significant progression from where things had been previously with regard to Montas and his shoulder.

Due to the discomfort in his right shoulder, which hampered his offseason advancement and put Montas behind schedule heading into spring training, it was previously anticipated that Montas would be behind schedule. However, general manager Brian Cashman stated around three weeks ago that the damage did not seem to be of a structural character.

The general manager said that once Montas started his throwing program, more information would be obtained about the situation. That was supposed to take place in late January, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that not everything went as well as had been intended. Along with the right-handed reliever Lou Trivino, the 29-year-old Montas was acquired from the A’s at the trade deadline last summer as part of a deal that also involved the return to Oakland of the prospects Ken Waldichuk, JP Sears, Luis Medina, and Cooper Bowman.
