All you need to know about the horrific injury suffered by Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux and his timetable for return.
Shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers Gavin Lux suffered a right knee injury during yesterday’s game against the Padres. Lux fell while attempting to escape a throw from San Diego third baseman Jantzen Witte while sprinting from second to third base on a Luke Williams grounder.
Lux was lifted onto a cart and wheeled off the field without putting any weight on his leg. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters after the game that the infielder felt a pop in the outer portion of his knee. It’s too early to tell whether he’ll be gone for an extended period of time. If he is sidelined for an extended period of time, veteran Miguel Rojas is expected to fill in.
Rojas, who was acquired from the Marlins in January, has been assigned to the bench as a utility player. He’s a top-tier defensive shortstop with a long track record as an everyday player at the position, albeit he’s not as good a hitter as Lux.
Undoubtedly, Los Angeles is off to a rocky start in exhibition action. Lux, if healthy, is primed to play a vital part in the Los Angeles infield. Last season, as the starting second baseman, he hit.276/.346/.399 with a 10% walk rate and a 20.2% strikeout percentage in 471 plate appearances.
After Trea Turner left in free agency, he’s expected to switch to shortstop this year. It would be the first season that the former top prospect serves as the Dodgers’ primary shortstop, having previously moved to other positions in deference to Corey Seager and Turner.
