All you need to know about what happened to San Diego Padres star pitcher Joe Musgrove and his timeline for return.
The San Diego Padres have sustained significant damage as a result. After suffering a fracture to his left big toe in an accident that occurred in the weight room on Monday, starting pitcher Joe Musgrove will be sidelined for an indefinite amount of time.
After compiling a 2.93 earned run average (ERA) in 181 innings in 2022, Musgrove was a formidable contender to start for the Padres on opening day. The native of San Diego is now playing on a contract that was signed in August and is worth a total of $100 million over the course of five years.
The Padres will have to immediately rely on their starting pitching organisational depth, which they have been touting as being particularly good. If a contender like Reiss Knehr, Jay Groome, Brent Honeywell, Julio Teheran, or Ryan Weathers demonstrates that he is worthy of a spot in the rotation during spring training, then the plan to use a six-man rotation to start the season will not be scrapped.
Even if the Padres decide that a five-man rotation is the best way to go, at least one of the starters will be asked to fill in for relief duty and throw a large number of innings. As of this now, we do not have any information regarding when Musgrove will be back.
