All you need to know about what happened to Boston Red Sox player Justin Turner as he left the game after being hit on face.
After getting hit in the face by a pitch on Monday, first baseman Justin Turner of the Boston Red Sox is undergoing treatment for soft tissue injuries and is being examined for a possible concussion, according to a statement released by the organization. Matt Manning, the starting pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, got Turner to swing and miss on the fourth pitch of his at-bat in the first inning. Turner was knocked to the ground and started bleeding almost instantly after being hit.
After leaving the field under his own strength and accompanied by a trainer, he fled the competition before being transported to a nearby medical facility. According to the Red Sox, Turner is “stable, awake, and in excellent spirits given the circumstances” despite the fact that he will undergo additional testing.
Because J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts have departed the team, Trevor Story is out with an injury, and the majority of the important batters for the Red Sox bat are left-handed. Alex Cora intended to primarily hit Turner third in the lineup, between left-handed hitters Rafael Devers and Masataka Yoshida, when he signed Turner because he would add essential balance to this lineup.
There isn’t anyone else on the squad who bats right-handed that comes close to matching him. That is exactly what the Red Sox will be missing out on if they are forced to do without Turner for an extended period of time. Because he was going to DH most of the time, there isn’t really a problem with positional play, but there’s no simple method to replace his spot in the lineup.
Kourtney, Turner’s wife, shared a story on Instagram stating that her husband suffered “16 stitches and a lot of swelling but we are thanking God for no fractures and clear scans.”
Here’s what Turner said, “Thanks to everyone for all the messages and prayers! I’m feeling very fortunate to come out of yesterday with no breaks & all my chiclets in tact. The @RedSox medical staff and @Lee_Health have been absolutely amazing & I’m going to be back out on the field as soon as possible!”
After spending the previous nine seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the two-time All-Star agreed to terms with the Boston Red Sox during the summer that will pay him $22 million over the course of two seasons. In 128 games played, he had a batting average of.278 with 13 home runs and 81 RBIs.
It was anticipated that the veteran would mostly serve as Boston’s designated hitter during this season, in addition to seeing some action at first base. It was reported that Turner had a facial laceration that required 16 stitches to heal properly. The results of the X-rays that were taken of the area came back negative, which suggests that Turner avoided suffering serious brain damage. After the game, Manning emphasized that the pitch was not intentional, and he noted that he intends to contact Turner and apologize for his actions.
After getting himself up off the ground, Turner was accompanied by Red Sox trainers as he made his way back to the clubhouse while clutching a towel to his face. According to a statement released by the Red Sox, Turner was transported in an ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Turner, who is now 38 years old, played for the Dodgers for nine seasons and had a batting line of.296/.375/.490 (133 OPS+) during that time. He was one of the faces of a team that made the playoffs frequently and advanced far in those series. He was selected for two All-Star teams and placed in the top 10 in the voting for National League Most Valuable Player on both occasions.
