All you need to know about what happened to Ryan Helsley of the St. Louis Cardinals who recently suffered an injury.
Right-handed reliever Ryan Helsley has been placed on the 15-day injured list by the St. Louis Cardinals due to a strained right forearm. The Cardinals made the announcement on Monday. In his place, the Memphis Redbirds have brought up the right-handed pitcher Jake Woodford from Triple-A. The addition of Helsley to the injured list is effective as of June 10 and is made retroactive to that date.
Despite the Cardinals playing in a pair of nail-biting contests since the middle of last week, Helsley has not pitched in a game since that time for the Cardinals. Giovanny Gallegos was given the opportunity to save the game for the team on Friday, when the bullpen had been restored to its full complement of players after an off day.
It is now clearer why Helsley went missing from the action of the game for several days. Although the team has not yet provided any significant data regarding his prognosis or likely recovery window, he will be out of commission for at least the rest of the month until the 25th of the current month.
The Cardinals are already in a downward spiral, and the loss of Helsley is another negative development. The right-handed reliever, who is 28 years old and is now sporting a 3.24 earned run average, a 32% strikeout rate, a 10.7% walk rate, a 43.1% grounder rate, and seven saves in 25 innings of work out of the bullpen, has not been nearly as dominant as he was in 2022. Helsley had a stellar 2.40 earned run average (ERA) and a 20-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his first 15 innings of work after the month of May turned over on the calendar.
In this campaign, Ryan Helsley has posted a respectable record of 3-4 with an ERA of 3.24. He has recorded 33 strikeouts and has been instrumental in securing 7 saves in 22 appearances. These numbers indicate his effectiveness as a reliever and his ability to contribute positively to the team.
Unfortunately, Helsley’s injury comes at a challenging time for the Cardinals, as the team has struggled this season. With a disappointing record of 27-39, they have not met the expectations placed upon them. The absence of veteran catcher Yadier Molina, who retired last season, maybe felt especially by Helsley, as Molina likely played a vital role in guiding and supporting the young pitcher.
On the offensive side, Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt have been notable contributors to the team. Arenado boasts a .276 batting average with 68 hits, 13 home runs, 45 RBIs, and 30 runs scored in 63 games this season. Goldschmidt, on the other hand, has a .287 batting average with 71 hits, 10 home runs, 28 RBIs, and 42 runs scored in 64 games. Despite their individual performances, the team as a whole has struggled to find consistency and success.
The pitching staff, including Helsley, has faced its challenges, contributing to the team’s struggles. Inconsistencies on the mound have hindered the Cardinals’ ability to win games and establish a strong presence. As the season progresses, the Cardinals will need to address their shortcomings and work towards improving their overall performance.
The return of Helsley from his injury will be crucial in bolstering their pitching staff and providing a boost to the team. Additionally, the Cardinals will need to find ways to overcome the absence of Yadier Molina’s leadership and defensive expertise behind the plate. With talented players like Arenado and Goldschmidt, the Cardinals possess the potential to turn their season around. However, it will require a collective effort from the team, improved pitching performances, and consistent offensive production to overcome their disappointing start and make a push for success.
