What happened to Tyler Glasnow?

All you need to know about what happened to Tyler Glasnow and his timetable for return in the upcoming MLB season.

After all of the good vibes that came from the Rays’ first Grapefruit League win — a 14-2 affair against the Orioles at Ed Smith Stadium during which Tampa Bay homered three times — the news broke that starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow may be forced to miss time with another injury. Injuries are common in Spring Training, if not unwelcome, and after the Rays’ first Grapefruit League win, the Rays homered three times.

The club said on Tuesday that it was waiting for the results of an MRI to establish the severity of the right-oblique hander’s strain. This came a day after Glasnow walked off the mound with a trainer following a six-pitch bullpen session.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery in August of 2021, Glasnow pitched in only two regular-season games for the Rays the following year (2022). He also made a good start in the AL Wild Card Series in ’22, going the entire game without allowing a score. Before going on the disabled list in ’21, Glasnow had established himself as one of baseball’s most successful first-half pitchers by compiling a record of 2.66 earned runs allowed, 0.93 walks allowed, 123 strikeouts, and 88 innings pitched.

Throughout his five seasons with the Rays, Glasnow, now 29, had compiled a record of 17-9 with a 3.05 earned run average. He was prepared to be the 1-2 punch behind All-Star and rotation star Shane McClanahan until he was traded.

With the exception of his Tommy John operation, Glasnow had spent the majority of his career in pretty good health. On March 18, 2022, he underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his right ankle. As a result of the procedure, he was unable to participate in his Tommy John rehabilitation for a period of three weeks.
