After the conclusion of the next season, Aaron Nola will be able to sign with any team as a free agent. Nola is now in the third and final year of a contract extension that he signed before the start of the 2019 season. The deal was for $45 million over four years and includes a club option worth $16 million for the 2023 season.
Last year, Nola finished fourth in the voting for the National League Cy Young Award after posting a record of 11-13 with a 3.25 earned run average. He will turn 30 on June 4. During 2018, he has the most starts (143) and innings pitched (871 2/3), which places him first among all pitchers in the Big League.
Nola was selected by the Phillies with the seventh overall pick in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft, and he made his first appearance in the major leagues on July 21, 2015. He will be playing for the Phillies for the ninth season of his big league career, all of which he has spent wearing their uniform.
With 1,380 career strikeouts, Nola currently sits in seventh place on the franchise’s all-time chart for strikeouts. But, he has the potential to move up to fourth place on that list if he racks up at least 206 strikeouts this season. During the course of the past four complete seasons, he has recorded an annual average of 227 strikeouts.
