The manager of the Atlanta Braves, Brian Snitker, has confirmed to the media that Michael Soroka will definitely start the game on Monday. Since the month of August in 2020, Soroka has not pitched in the major leagues. However, the nearly three-year wait to return appears to be coming to an end on Monday, as a series of transactions suggest that he will be called up to start the game against the Athletics the following day.
Today, the Braves scratched Soroka from his start at Triple-A, and as MLB.com’s Mark Bowman points out, the fact that the Braves decided to option Dylan Dodd and replace him with Dereck Rodriguez lends further credence to the notion that Soroka will be the one who gets called upon. Soroka was scheduled to pitch in today’s game, but the Braves decided against it.
Before a series of injuries wrecked his career, Soroka, who was selected by the Braves with the 28th overall choice in 2015, was a promising young starter for the team. Between 2018 and 2020, he made 37 starts with an earned run average of 2.86. The majority of those starts came during the 2019 season, which was also the year when he finished sixth in voting for NL Cy Young.
Since the start of the 2020 campaign, everything has gone from bad to worse for Soroka. A ruptured Achilles tendon forced him to miss a year of work, and just as he was getting close to returning to the field, the tendon blew out again, leaving Soroka with yet another protracted period of rehabilitation ahead of him.
After he had recovered from that, he played for a little while at the Triple-A level before the conclusion of the 2022 season. However, he was never able to play in the major leagues since he was shut down with shoulder fatigue. He started spring training in the running for a starting job in Atlanta’s rotation, but a hamstring strain caused him to fall behind in the competition, and he was sent down to the minor leagues to begin the season.
This season, he has made eight starts at the Triple-A level, compiling a 4.33 earned run average and pitching an average of approximately 4 1/3 innings per start. When Soroka does make his way back to the big league mound tomorrow, it will undoubtedly be the subject of a great deal of anticipation.
