All you need to know about the position at which Alan Trejo will be playing in the upcoming 2023 MLB season.
Infielder Alan Trejo of the Colorado Rockies would tell you that his heart is at shortstop, but his blood was racing after a beautiful play he made at second base to finish out the first inning of the Colorado Rockies’ 8-6 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Salt River Fields on Wednesday afternoon.
First baseman Harold Castro made a diving stop and tipped a powerful grounder hit by Vinnie Pasquantino, who plays first base for the Royals. Trejo, though, blasted the ball barehanded and in time to pitcher Ryan Feltner who was covering first. Trejo pranced to the dugout with his mouth wide open, his tongue hanging out, and his flaps down as if he had no problem playing second base.
The Rockies went into the spring expecting shortstop prospect Ezequiel Tovar, who was listed as the No. 25 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, to be their starting shortstop. The home run that he hit against the Rangers on Tuesday and the grounder that he picked up and threw out of the park by Dairon Blanco in the second inning on Wednesday screamed why.
But Trejo, who came to Spring Training to try to change some perceptions, had a change in latitude since Gold Glove second baseman Brendan Rodgers got a dislocated left shoulder in the game before. This allowed Trejo to take over for Brendan Rodgers. Someone needs to play second base while Rodgers is out; however, it depends on how long Rodgers will be out of the lineup and whether or not the Rockies will allow him to continue his training into the early days of the regular season. Trejo, who is 27 years old, has no problem with competing for as many starts at second base as he can get if that is where he is given the chance to play.
Mexico advanced to the next round of the 2023 World Baseball Classic after claiming victory against the United States of America in a match from Pool C. In this game, Mexico took the lead by as many as nine runs after scoring early and frequently. On the previous day, Mexico was defeated by Colombia in extra innings in a game that ended with a score of 5-4, while the United States of America prevailed over Great Britain by a score of 6-2.
Mexico was able to make up for their loss in the first game, but the United States route forward has gotten more complicated as a result of using all eight of their pitchers. As a result of the restrictions imposed by pitch count limits (65 in Pool C play), as well as the fact that all of Team USA’s pitchers have a Major League season to prepare for, manager Mark DeRosa is in the position of having to look for 27 outs while putting the health of his players first.

Nevertheless, accidents do happen, and now their second baseman will likely miss the entire season due to an injury. They have options available to them, such as playing Montero at third base and shifting McMahon to second.
Nolan Jones, who played third base in the minor leagues but has exclusively played outfield in the major leagues, is another player who could be considered. No matter what happens, having versatile players like Harold Castro and Alan Trejo, who are both capable of playing several positions, on their team can only work to their advantage.
