All you need to know about the team that Diamondback player Alek Thomas is playing for the World Baseball Classic.
In the course of Alek Thomas’s baseball career, at some point in the future, perhaps in a few years’ time, there may have been an opportunity for him to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Given that so many All-Stars have already donned the red, white, and blue, a lot would ride on his production and whether or not there will be any unfilled spots in the roster.
In the meanwhile, though, the outfielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks who was born in the United States has been asked by Team Mexico to play for the red, white, and green. And because Thomas, whose mother is from the Mexican state of Sonora, was a key member of the United States team that won the World Baseball Softball Confederation U-18 Baseball World Cup in 2017, he already has the experience of competing in an international competition.
After their historic victory over Puerto Rico, Thomas and Mexico have already secured their spot in the semifinals of the WBC tournament. They will now focus their attention on winning the entire competition.
Thomas has a strong history with Mexico’s World Boxing Council team. As a former and longtime strength and conditioning coach for the Chicago White Sox, Allen Thomas collaborated with two coaches from Team Mexico, Ever Magallanes and Bobby Magallanes, both of whom managed for the White Sox in their various minor league affiliates. Allen and Alek are familiar faces to Mexico manager Benji Gil, who has known them for years.
