All the details you need to know where will pitcher Bryan Shaw play in the upcoming 2023 MLB season.
The White Sox announced today that they had signed veteran reliever Bryan Shaw to a minor league deal and invited him to spring training. During the next few weeks, the CAA client will compete for a job in Chicago’s bullpen.
Shaw, 35, has spent most of his career in Cleveland, including the last two seasons. He battled to a 5.40 ERA in 58 1/3 innings with the Guardians in 2022, owing to one of his career’s lowest strand percentages (66.3%) and one of the greatest home-run rates (1.39 HR/9, 15.5% homer-to-flyball ratio).
From 2013 through 2017, Shaw was one of the game’s most dependable and durable relievers, topping the American League in appearances three times and leading all of MLB twice. During that time, he threw 358 2/3 innings of 3.11 ERA ball, paving the way for a three-year, $27MM deal with the Rockies that almost instantly backfired. Shaw had a 5.61 ERA in two seasons with Colorado before getting released and struggling the next season with the Mariners.
While Shaw’s numbers have been terrible since 2018 (5.23 ERA, 268 1/3 innings), his 2021 season provided a glimmer of his former self. He’s only one year removed from pitching 77 1/3 innings with a 3.49 ERA in his first of two seasons back in Cleveland. Shaw has maintained decent velocity (94.6 mph average four-seamer over the last two seasons) and above-average ground-ball tendencies despite his struggles.
