All you need to know about why did Carlos Correa sign with the Minnesota Twins once again after a big free agency period.
When Carlos Correa and the Twins reached a deal on a six-year, $200 million contract, which may be worth up to $270 million in total, the long national nightmare that had been plaguing Correa was finally over. He was fortunate enough to be able to pass the physical examination this time around.
Since the middle of December, the shortstop whose ankle has been the subject of intense scrutiny appears to have found a new home for 2023 and beyond; but, it is also a home that is familiar to him. This offseason, Correa came quite close to signing with both the Giants and the Mets; however, the negotiations ultimately fell through with both teams due to concerns regarding Correa’s medical history.
According to reports, both organizations were concerned about the possibility of further damage to Correa’s right ankle, which he fractured while playing in a minor-league game in 2014. Medicals ultimately cost Correa $150 million on the face value of the contract, but it was still the best offer he was close to signing. The Giants’ original 13-year, $350 million pact with Correa was still the best offer he was close to signing.
Correa has a history with the Twins, which is an advantage for him in this situation, but it also benefits the Twins. Because he played the entirety of the 2022 season with the Twins, they should have a greater understanding of his current physical condition than any other team.
