The Women’s Football World Cup starts today and Sammy-Jo Luxton believes skill level should decide who gets paid what
Another day and another controversy has cropped up regarding equal pay in sports. There has been a long debate on whether women should be paid equally as men across sports.
While some sports like tennis, specifically the Grand Slams, have ensured that the pay gap has decreased over the years other sports are still trying to catch up.
Some football bodies have also made the decision to ensure equal pay for the men and women teams but FIFA hasn’t done that for the upcoming world cup.
A report confirmed that FIFA would only be paying a quarter of the amount that the men earned from the 2022 World Cup.
The 2023 Women’s World Cup still will be getting a huge amount, but the Australian Women’s team are not happy with that. They believe that women should be paid the same as men, but MMA star Sammy-Jo Luxton has some other thoughts.
She brought up the skill level and revenue debate in this, which is a point many others have brought up.
Sammy-Jo Luxton brings up revenues and skill levels
The MMA star pointed out that football is a male-dominated sport and other men will watch it simply because the men’s teams are at a higher skill and bring in more revenue.
Sammy-Jo also brought up an MMA comparison and said that men “sell more” PPVs to male audiences.
The MMA star also had a lot more to discuss this, but couldn’t simply because Twitter didn’t allow her to express herself completely. Sammy-Jo wanted to be in a debate, and her point of view is certainly interesting.
“Theyre in a male dominated sport; men will watch the men as the skill level is higher, therefore generating the revenue to pay the men. It’s the exact same for fighting;growing up I used to question why a boys life was worth more than mine, but men sell more PPV to male audience”
The viewership for the men’s football world cup is one of the highest in the world and it does bring in a lot more revenue than the female world cup.
However, equal pay is a difficult subject when skill level is brought into the discussion. Tennis works because the women also generate as much revenue and excitement as the men, but that isn’t the same for all other sports.
