Monte Carlo Masters 2022: Stefanos Tsitsipas will square off against Laslo Dere in the Round of 16 at the Monte Carlo Country Club in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on Thursday, April 14.
After a strong start to the year, Stefanos Tsitsipas will be looking to defend his Monte Carlo title. The Greek star is one of the favourites to win the competition and cruise to the quarter-finals. After a first-round bye, Tsitsipas brushed aside Italian Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-0 to make it to the round of 16. He will now be hoping to continue his impressive form from this calendar year.
Meanwhile, Laslo Dere got his first win in Monte Carlo when he beat Maxime Cressy in the first round. The Serbian then beat his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. Dere will now face one of the toughest challenges of his season when he meets Tsitsipas in the third round.
Tsitsipas and Dere have met each other just once on an ATP court. The Greek defeated the Serb in two tight sets at the Mexican Open in February this year. Their encounter in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters will be only the second time they lock horns.
Tsitsipas is currently ranked No.5 in the world and is also tipped as the favourite to defend his Monte Carlo crown. The 23-year old put down a statement win against Fognini. Nevertheless, Dere will be hoping to cause a massive upset and level the H2H record when he faces Tsitsipas.
