Montpellier Open 2023: Benjamin Bonzi vs Lorenzo Sonego – Preview, Head-to-Head, and Prediction

8th seed Benjamin Bonzi takes on Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the round of 32 of the 2023 Montpellier Open on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old had a great start to the season. Bonzi played in the Maharashtra Open and made it to the finals of an ATP event for the first time in his career. During the tournament, he defeated Tseng Chun-hsin, Emil Ruusuvuori, Filip Krajinovic, and Botic van de Zandschulp before going down to Tallon Griekspoor in the final.

Bonzi went on to play in the Adelaide International 2. He crashed out in the first round following a loss to Robin Haase. In the Australian Open, Bonzi made it to the third round of a Grand Slam event for the first time in his career. After wins against Mattia Belluci and Pablo Carreno Busta, Bonzi lost to Alex de Minaur. In the doubles event, Bonzi teamed with compatriot Arthur Rinderknech to reach the quarterfinals.

Lorenzo Sonego

Sonego opened the new season by playing in the Adelaide International 1. He faced Daniil Medvedev in the round of 32. Sonego gave Medvedev great competition in the first set but went down in the tiebreak. Sonego retired during the second set owing to injury. In the Adelaide International 2, Sonego lost to Jack Draper in the first round.

The 27-year-old defeated Nuno Borges in the first round of the Australian Open. He went on to face 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the second round. Sonego gave the Polish athlete great competition but in the end, Hurkacz won the match in a five-set thriller.

Benjamin Bonzi has a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Lorenzo Sonego. The former defeated Sonego in straight sets in the 2022 BNP Paribas Open.
