Top seed Holger Rune locks horns with world No. 75 Gregoire Barrere in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Montpellier Open on Friday.
The 19-year-old came into the tournament on the back of a fourth-round exit in the Australian Open. He lost to 5th seed Andrey Rublev in five sets in his first-ever fourth-round appearance in the Australian Open.
The Danish youngster received a bye into the second round of the 2023 Montpellier Open. Rune squared off against Marc-Andrea Huesler and managed to avenge his loss in the finals of the 2022 Sofia Open. The first set was closely contested but Rune won it in the tiebreak. Rune dominated the second set and eventually won the match 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. He served quite well and smashed 7 aces. Rune also had a win percentage of 80 on the first serve.
It has been a memorable campaign thus far for the French star. He managed to oust defending champion Alexander Bublik in the round of 32. The match turned out to be a thrilling affair as it swayed from one side to another. Barrere held his nerves to win the match 6-4, 6-7 (12-14), 7-6 (7-3).
In the round of 16, Barrere played with a lot of confidence and defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili with a dominant display in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
This will be the first meeting between Holger Rune and Gregoire Barrere. Therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
