Second seed Jannik Sinner takes on Hungarian No. 1 Marton Fucsovics in the round of 16 of the 2023 Montpellier Open on Wednesday.
The talented youngster started the season by playing in the Adelaide International 1. He got the better of Kyle Edmund and Thanasi Kokkinakis to reach the quarterfinals. Eventual finalist Sebastian Korda defeated Sinner in the quarterfinals in straight sets.
Sinner went on to play in the Australian Open as the 15th-seeded player. He defeated the likes of Kyle Edmund, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and Marton Fucsovics en route to the fourth round. Sinner lost to eventual finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas but not before showing his quality. The Greek star won the first couple of sets but Sinner made a great comeback to win the next two sets. Tsitsipas emerged victorious in the fifth set but Sinner’s fightback was lauded by many.
The 30-year-old had a great start to the season as he won a Challenger title in Canberra, Australia. In the Adelaide International 2, his run ended in the first round of qualifying after suffering a loss against Robin Haase. Fucsovics defeated Federico Coria and Lloyd Harris in the first two rounds of the Australian Open. In the third round, Fucsovics lost to Jannik Sinner after winning the first two sets.
In the round of 32 of the Montpellier Open, Fucsovics got the better of Geoffrey Blancaneaux in three sets 7-5, 5-7, 6-0, converting 6 out of 9 break points.
The head-to-head scoreline is intriguingly poised at 2-2. Sinner won their most recent encounter at the 2023 Australian Open in five sets.
