More women than ever feel comfortable coming out and being open with their sexuality in sports. It’s rather common to see lesbians come out and talk about their experiences as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in sports.

However, this radical change did not happen overnight. We’re going to show you the most famous lesbians in sports, how they got where they are, and the impact they had on their sports.

Billie Jean King is probably the most famous lesbian athlete in modern times. She came out while she was at the top of the sports world, stunning millions around the world. Her courage helped people feel more comfortable looking for love as a woman seeking a woman.

The midfielder from Canterbury is an amazing field hockey star, and she loves representing her country in the sport. She is an openly lesbian player, but she does not speak out much on the topic.

Sue Bird may seem like a familiar name to many fans of Megan Rapinoe, and that is because the two have been dating for the last several years. Bird is a WNBA player that has excelled at her sport and works with Rapinoe to speak out on behalf of LGBTQ+ sports players.
