Tyrone Curtis “Muggsy” Bogues was the Round 1, 12thoverall draft pick by the Washington Bullets (now Washington Wizards) in 1987. Bogues played in the position of Point guard and he was named to the 1987 First-team All-ACC.
Before joining the NBA, Bogues played in the United States Basketball League (USBL) for the Rhode Island Gulls. In his only season in the USBL, Bogues averaged 22.2 points and 8.4 assists per game and led the league in minutes per game.
Then, Bogues was drafted twelfth overall in the 1987 NBA draft by the Washington Bullets (now Washington Wizards). Bogues made his NBA debut on November 6, 1987, against the Atlanta Hawks at Omni Coliseum; he started and led the team in assists.
In 1988, Bogues joined the Charlotte Hornets. Notably, he played ten seasons for the Hornets. During his time in Charlotte, the Hornets rose from mediocrity to a serious contender; Bogues three times led the team to the playoffs. Moreover, during this time, Bogues was wildly popular among basketball fans, and so were the Hornets.
Further, in 1997, Bogues was traded to the Golden State Warriors. He led the Warriors in assists in the 1997–98 season despite starting in less than half of the team’s game.
Prior to the 1999–2000 season, Bogues signed with the Toronto Raptors. However, Bogues played his last NBA game on January 27, 2001, against the Chicago Bulls. On February 22, 2001, Bogues was traded to the New York Knicks. Then, on August 10, 2001, Bogues was again traded to the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks soon waived Bogues after he told the team that he intended to step away from basketball to care for his mother who was fighting cancer.
