Naomi Osaka Early Life

Osaka was born in Japan on the 16th of October in 1997. Her father is Haitian and her mother is from Japan. Osaka’s father helped train her by making the youngster watch videos of the Williams sisters.

Her family shifted to Florida, USA when she was 15 in hopes of getting better training and developing her skills. 

As the youngster developed her talent, her family decided she would represent Japan, although she was brought up in the United States.

She also has an older sister, Mari, who is also a professional Tennis player. 

Naomi Osaka turned pro in September 2013, even before turning 16, and quickly rose through the ranks.

Her first major breakthrough came when she made it to her first WTA Final in 2016, which saw her break into the top 100 and eventually the top 50 in the same year.

She then won her first Grand Slam in 2018 and then there was no looking back. She is currently ranked no.2 in the world.

Just few weeks after turning pro, Osaka was ranked no.406 in the world. However she was only 16 back then.

She broke into the top 250 for the first time just before the end of 2014 WTA season. And in the year 2015 she reached the highest ranking of her career back then, at no.144.

A break into the top 100 was achieved after she beat the then no.18 ranked Sara Errani in the Miami Open, after earning an entry as a wildcard. And, in the same year Osaka reached her first WTA final at the Pan Pacific Open. As a result Osaka broke into the top 50.

With 2017 being a year to forget, Naomi Osaka made giant strides in the year 2018, winning the US Open, which saw her enter the top 10 of the rankings. She then followed it up with a victory at the Australian Open, as he reached the helm just 5 years after turning pro.

2019 was a quite year after her Australian Open success, and so was 2020 for a large part. But she once again showed her resilience, as she won her second US Open title in 2020, following it up with a victory at the 2021 Australian Open.

She is currently ranked no. 2.

Naomi Osaka has a stunning net worth of $25 million. She is one of the highest paid female athletes in the world.

A large part of her earnings is due to her endorsements. Osaka earned a mind-boggling $37.4 million between June 2019 and May 2020, with $34 million coming from her endorsements alone.

Osaka is ranked number 29 in Forbes List of World’s Highest Paid Athletes in the year 2020.

Despite being only 23, Osaka already has 4 Grand Slam titles to her name. Her first Grand Slam win came at the 2018 US Open, when she defeated Serena Williams in the finals.

She then carried her form on to the 2019 Australian Open, showing her dominance on hard court. Osaka beat a resilient Petra Kvitova in the final to clinch her second Grand Slam title.

She didn’t have much success in the later part of 2019 nor in the major part of 2020, before she won the 2020 US Open. This time she beat Victoria Azarenka after being a set down.

Just like she had done in 2018-19, Osaka followed her 2020 US Open victory striking gold at the 2021 Australian Open as well. She beat Jennifer Brady in the finals.

Osaka hasn’t had much success in the Grass or Clay courts.

Besides this, she has three WTA Tour titles to her name.

Naomi Osaka Family and Relationships

Osaka was born to a Japanese mother Tamaki Osaka and a Haitian father Leonard Francois. She also has an elder sister, Mari Osaka who is a retired tennis player.

Osaka and her family moved to New York from Japan, when she was only 3 years old. It was her father who decided to train them to become a tennis professional, after watching the Williams Sisters at the French Open 1999.

Since 2018, Osaka has been in a relationship with American rapper Cordae, and the pair are still going strong.

Osaka is endorsed by a plethora of brands. Yonex has been her racquet sponsor since time immemorial. Yonex also support her with custom tennis racquets built specially for her.

She is one of the biggest female Nike Athletes, and is also the brand ambassador of Nissan Motors.

Osaka also has endorsement deals with Loius Vuitton, Tag Heuer and Workday.

She has also had endorsement deals with MasterCard, Procter & Gamble, Nissan and All Nippon Airways which saw her earn around $16m.

Osaka is said to earn $34 million a year from endorsements alone.
