Home favourite and WTA World No. 2 Naomi Osaka made her way to the third round of the Olympics 2020 at Ariake Tennis Park.
The Japanese won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 win over 49th-ranked Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland. She is now the highest seed in the draw after Australian Ashleigh Barty’s exit.
Osaka has been the talk of town in the women’s draw ever since her French Open controversy. She opted to withdraw from the tournament, followed by Wimbledon citing health issues.
After her return in her home country, she will look to win her first ever Olympic gold after winning 4 Grand Slams in her career.
“Well you know, definitely it would mean a lot for me to win gold here but I know it’s a process,” she said.
“You know, these are the best players in the world and I honestly haven’t played in a while so I’m trying to keep it one match at a time. All in all, I’m just really happy to be here.”
The Japanese will face2019 French Open runner-up Marketa Vondroušová of the Czech Republic, who beat Mihaela Buzărnescu of Romania 6-1, 6-2.
