NBA superstar Kevin Durant knows how to fix the dunk contest. Learn about KD’s solution.
Remember the good old days when NBA superstars like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, and other legends used to rise and fly high for a roaring slam dunk?
Yes, those days were the best days of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest and in the current era and time, those days are sadly gone.
However, Phoenix Suns star, Kevin Durant wishes the scenario to be different from the present condition of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
“I think the stars need to come back,” he said on the ETCs with Kevin Durant podcast (around the 11:20 mark) “… It felt like it was stars every year when I was a kid.”
Further, 34-year-old Durant named Ja Morant and Zion Williamson as star players he would love to see participate this year in the Slam Dunk contest.
Who are the participants of this year’s NBA Slam Dunk contest?
Nevertheless, this season’s NBA Slam Dunk participants are already decided. This year’s participants are Kenyon Martin Jr. from the Houston Rockets, Mac McClung of the NBA G League’s Delaware Blue Coats, Trey Murphy III from the New Orleans Pelicans, and Jericho Sims from the New York Knicks.
Even though the players on the list may put on a show, the participants on the above list are not necessarily the best players in the league. To many people’s astonishment, even Mac McClung is participating this year for the Dunk contest. McClung does not even play in the NBA but is currently a G-League player.
Nevertheless, Kevin Durant acknowledged McClung’s athleticism and gave him his props.
The Dunk Contest used to be the highlight of All-Star Weekend and oftentimes shone even brighter than the actual All-Star game.
Michael Jordan’s slam from the free-throw line, Carter’s aerial spin and assertion that the event was finished after one dunk, and a battle between Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon are some of the most memorable All-Star moments.
However, Obi Toppin, Anfernee Simons, Derrick Jones Jr., and Hamidou Diallo are the last four Slam Dunk Contest winners, a group of NBA players that don’t exactly scream star power.
Furthermore, although last season’s Dunk Contest was won by Obi Toppin, it featured a number of missed dunks in addition to the lack of star power, which didn’t exactly excite the crowd.
The fans would undoubtedly get more engaged and potentially witness another of those iconic Dunk Contest moments with the addition of a star talent like Zion Williamson or Ja Morant.
Yet it seems as though stars have been reluctant to play for some time, and this season won’t be any different—unfortunately for Durant and the fans.
Do you think Durant’s suggestion can fix the dunk contest?
