The Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson was handed the comeback athlete year award after he won the NBA Championship.
The annual ESPYs were held recently Golden State Warriors star player Stephen Curry was the host this year. He became the second player in the NBA to host that award. Only LeBron James had hosted the ESPYS before him in the NBA.
Curry’s teammate Klay Thompson was awarded with the Best Comeback Athlete of the Year award. Klay came back after missing the last two seasons of his career and contributed to a championship win for the Warriors.
Klay won the award over the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Burrow also had a prolific season in the NFL but he lost in the Super Bowl while Klay’s team was able to get the job done.
On receiving the award, Klay Thompson thanked the Warriors organization for trusting him. He said, “I would not be here without the Warriors organization. I mean, who pays a guy after tearing his ACL? That’s unheard of…”
He added, “But they have faith in me, so I know you’re out there somewhere, Bob [Myers]. I appreciate you. Peter Guber as well, and Joe [Lacob] have faith in us and, man, just incredible. And I would like to thank my parents as well.”
Klay Thompson had a tough time away from the court
After missing more than two years Klay Thompson was back on the court this season for the Warriors. The time away from the court was tough for him, and was full of setbacks.
He faced two consecutive serious injuries that could have made any player consider retirement. However, he didn’t back down from the challenge and continued to work hard and make a return. Next season he’ll be rested, recovered, and 100% healthy. It’s going to be a scary sight for the rest of the league because when Klay gets hot, he gets really hot.
