Gerarld Wallace Playing Career
Gerald Wallace was started playing for Childersburg High School in Alabama and was named the Naismith Prep Player of the Year in his senior year. He earned a full scholarship to the University of Alabama where he averaged 9.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in his one and only season. Soon after, he declared for the NBA Draft and was picked with their 25th pick by the Sacramento Kings.
Wallace did not break into the regular in his first three seasons with the Kings. He rarely played as a rookie but was able to showcase his athleticism and versatility, especially on the defensive end. Having developed his game-watching All-Stars like All-Stars Chris Webber, Peja Stojaković, and Vlade Divac, the former small forward was picked by Charlotte in the 2004 NBA Expansion Draft. He averaged 11.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks a game in his first season for the Bobcats. He quickly surpassed the league’s average in blocks over David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon at 2.19 per game.
Wallace was a “give-all” kind of a player who was not afraid to put his body on the line for his team. Because of this, he suffered plenty of injuries during his career and earned the nickname “Crash” from his teammates in Charlotte. His energy was infectious but ultimately, Wallace had to fine-tune his game for more effectiveness. After suffering a Grade 3 concussion in February 2008, he returned to finish the season with a career-high in points, assists, and minutes.
He became the first and only Bobcat to make an All-Star appearance in 2010 in Dallas. Wallace also led the team to their first-ever playoff appearance, scoring 25 points in the first game. In 2011, he was traded to the Portland Trailblazers where he played 42 games in one season and was moved on to the Brooklyn Nets. He re-signed with the Nets for $40 million for four years.
After two years, the Boston Celtics acquired Wallace along with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry in a multi-player team deal to build a championship roster. Unfortunately, Wallace’s injury troubles saw his career decline pretty fast as he found himself traded to the Warriors and 76ers next before getting waived.
