José Alvarado Martínez or commonly known as Jose ‘Grand Theft’ Alvarado is one of the key players for the New Orleans Pelicans. Ever since Alvarado started playing for the Pelicans, he has been showing sparks of brilliance to help the team in every way possible.

You would be surprised to know that now a key player for the Pelicans, Alvarado was originally an undrafted NBA player. Like many NBA players, Alvarado also had his fair share of struggles before achieving his NBA fame.

Jose Alvarado’s Basketball Journey

In his childhood, Alvarado initially played football but quit after injuring his neck. After quitting football, Alvarado took up playing basketball.

As a high schooler, Alvarado played basketball for Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, Queens in New York City. He was a good high school basketball player and achieved many accolades in his high school basketball career.

Later on, Alvarado played college basketball for Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets from 2017 to 2021. In these four years, Alvarado achieved major accolades in college basketball, like ACC Defensive Player of the Year (2021), Second-team All-ACC (2021), and Third-team All-ACC (2020).

After college, Alvarado entered the 2021 NBA Draft but sadly went undrafted. However, on August 19, 2021, Alvarado signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Further, Alvarado split his time in the NBA G-League and also played for the Pelicans in the NBA. Day in and day out, Alvarado proved his brilliance and finally, in 2022, Alvarado’s two-way deal was converted into a standard 4-year, $6.5 million contract.

Is Jose Alvarado really Mexican? Or is he a Puerto Rican?

Grand Theft Alvarado was born in New York City, New York, on April 12, 1998. As 24-year-old Alvarado was born on American soil, his nationality is hence predominantly American.

Unfortunately, there is no information about Alvarado’s parents. We also don’t know if Alvarado has any siblings.

Nevertheless, as far as we know, Alvarado is said to be of mixed ethnicity. Alvarado himself claims that he is of both Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage.

Notably, when Alvarado plays international basketball, that is, when he plays FIBA events, Alvarado at that time represents the Puerto Rico men’s national basketball team.

Apart from the above information, we don’t know much about Alvarado’s family and ethnicity.

However, Alvarado and his girlfriend are parents to a daughter who was born in 2020.
