There are many ways to motivate a basketball team. The legendary Phil Jackson, the brilliant Steve Kerr, and the likes of legendary basketball coaches always find innovative ways of motivating a team of ballers, and it is often said that one needs that extra spark of motivation to help a roster of basketball players play as a team and win the prestigious NBA Championship.

That is exactly what Tyronn Lue did with his Cleveland Cavaliers side back in 2016 when they defeated the Golden State Warriors in the Finals to win the Championship. The current Los Angeles Clippers head coach was in charge of the Cleveland outfit, and with his team in the finals – Lue felt like his players needed an additional incentive to give their best in the Finals.

Lue’s story about him motivating the Cavaliers into winning the Championship is an equally unique and hilarious behind-the-scenes story.

Speaking on The Old Man and The Threes podcast, Lue came clean about the motivation method he used to motivate the 2016 Championship winning Cleveland Cavaliers side. The Cavaliers were 3-1 down to the Warriors in the Finals and needed an extra push to turn things around–and it turns out that the push they needed was a humorous story of defrauding the players.

We won Game 5, and we’re in the locker room. “I demanded $200 from each person in the changing room. So I got $200 from all the players, the team owner and the general manager. I put the video I had recorded on my phone in the ceiling and asked, “Are we coming back after Game 7 to retrieve our money?” And a certain LeBron James came back.
