Andrew Wiggins came up with the perfect explanation why he took less money to sign his latest contract extension with the Golden State Warriors.
The Golden State Warriors have had a very eventful preseason. Fresh off winning the NBA Championship that makes it the Warriors’ fourth title in right years, the Warriors were faced with a transitional summer with three of their regular starters facing a contract situation. Their pre season went from tricky to nightmarish when an incident regarding two of the starters surfaced.
The defending champions’ preseason became all the trickier when the altercation between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole surfaced, putting further pressure on the Warriors to make a decision that settles all the uncertainty surrounding the contract extensions. And it looks like the Warriors have done so, as Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins were handed new contract deals.
While Poole was handed $140million over four years, Wiggins signed a contract extension that would make him earn $109million over four years – a smaller figure. However, it has been reported that Wiggins had been offered a bigger sum than the one that he put pen to paper to earn.
In fact, the $109million that Wiggins will earn over the course of the four years on his contract is a lesser sum than he previously got – meaning that he took a pay cut to stay with the Warriors.
Why did Wiggins take a pay cut to stay with the Golden State Warriors?
It turns that Wiggins’ decision to take a pay cut to extend his stay with the Warriors has its own reasons behind it.
When asked about why did he take a pay cut to stay at the Warriors, Wiggins proclaimed his love for the “special” project at the Warriors. “You never know what the future holds. I’m happy here,” Wiggins said. “We have a chance to do something special” Wiggins said. The guard added: “I believe in the guys, the organization. So we have a deal done and I’m happy about it.”
Wiggins’ decision to take a pay cut will be beneficial for the Warriors as well, as the franchise have a huge payroll for the 2023/24 season – and some much needed room in the payroll will mean that the champions can add reinforcements to make the roster even stronger.
