Dennis Schroder could be an interesting piece in a trade package for the Celtics
Boston Celtics had a 3-game winning run before the game against the Philadelphia 76ers and the players were gelling well, playing well in every game. They were blown away by Joel Embiid’s double-double performance in the game against the 76ers.
The Celtics were unable to get a completely healthy roster available for the games. Now that they are slowly getting their regular starting lineup back, they are playing with some flair and improved their record to 21-22. Just Marcus Smart is sidelined serving the NBA Covid-19 protocol. He is also expected to be back in 2 days period.
With this scenario, Boston is looking to shake things up a bit, to add a player via trade before the trade deadline. They had signed Dennis Schroder as an additional guard, who is just filling in the gaps for a player who is not available in a game. Interestingly, their backup player has started more matches (20) than actually coming in as sub (15).
Why would the Celtics look to trade Dennis Schroder?
Dennis Schroder has a 1 year, $ 5.9 million contract with the Celtics. Currently, Boston Celtics are 11th in the East and 1.5 games behind a play-in situation. Schroder was signed as a backup player, but his production as a backup is not encouraging for the team. He is averaging just above 11 points in 26 minutes, coming off the bench.
But Schroder thrives playing as a starter in the same team. His scoring average is around 20 points, with 48.7% FG made. This makes him a unique trade piece for the Celts. They seriously don’t want to disturb their core or starting lineup. So Schroder will have lesser chances starting the game for the Celtics. But the team cannot keep a backup player, whose performance takes a significant dip upon changing the role.
Schroder averages 16 points and 5 assists per game (due to starting many games), which gives him high trade value in the market. Celtics would love to capitalize on this and get some assets in return. This trade depends on the Celtics table position at the trade deadline.
