Marcus Smart believes that despite the uncertainty around his future, he was able to help the team reach the NBA Finals, unlike other former guards.
The Boston Celtics drafted Marcus Smart with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He has been a member of this team since then. Smart has seen everything. From the era of Isiah Thomas to the era of Kyrie Irving. They both were star point guards for the Celtics but failed to take them to the NBA Finals.
During his whole league career, Smart has faced criticism. People don’t think he fits well with this Celtics squad because he is not your traditional point guard.
He feels that this year he disproved everyone who had doubted him. Smart’s claim is supported by the fact that he won defensive player of the year, and took the Celtics to the NBA Finals.
Marcus Smart speaking to the Boston Globe said, “I think I proved a little bit everything, I hear the talks about ‘He’s not a true point guard’ and this and that. ‘They need a star point guard.’”
He also took a subtle dig at the former Celtics players who were the point guard of the team. The likes of Kyrie Irving, and Isiah Thomas were unable to take the Celtics in the NBA Finals but Smart did. As a result, he is quite proud of that.
Smart said, “We’ve had star point guards, and yet this so-called non-point guard is the only one that’s led them to the Finals. I think that right there says enough, I don’t really need to say too much more. I think everybody sees and understands, finally, the person I really am, and what I can do given the opportunity.”
In the NBA’s recently finished season, the Boston Celtics enjoyed an incredible run. They outplayed everyone and made it all the way to the NBA Finals. There is no arguing that the Celtics improved significantly from the previous season, despite their loss to the Golden State Warriors.
For the upcoming season, they will still need to develop their team. Although the current group of players far exceeded all of the goals that were set for them, they still lack a few pieces to claim the title. Brad Stevens is fully trusted by Marcus Smart to make the best choice for the squad.
