Serena Williams’ exit from the US Open and her immediate retirement has attracted plenty of tributes from sports personalities in the country – the best of them being from LeBron James.

The American tennis veteran who is widely regarded as one of the best ever to play the sport was knocked out in the third round of the US Open by Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia, and her prior announcement of considering retirement after the US Open meant it was likely to be her last ever Grand Slam.

As a result, the wishes and tributes came pouring in for the inspirational American. The most heartfelt of the tributes came from none other than LeBron James.

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar who is widely regarded as one of the best ever at his sport, took to social media to express his respect for the tennis superstar and the legacy she has left behind in her sport.

LeBron took to his Twitter to send his best wishes to Williams, and started off by congratulating her for an unbelievable career in tennis and called her a “GOAT.”

“What you’ve done for the game of tennis, what you’ve done for women and what you’ve done for just the category of sport – period, it’s unprecedented” said LeBron as he personally addressed Williams after her exit.

LeBron added: “It’s been an honour to watch your journey, to watch you conquer all of your goals you set, to see you break records, to see you just be amazing not only on the tennis court but also off it.”

The King thanked Serena for being an inspiration to so many, showing she was the greatest every time she was out there” – serving an emotional moment for fans.
