While plenty of personnel in and around the NBA world have been attacking Ben Simmons for his most recent performances, Gilbert Arenas is one former star who has taken the other road, coming out to defend the Australian playmaker amid extensive criticism.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Ben Simmons has found the help of Gilbert Arenas outside the court. When Doc Rivers and Joel Embiid went against Simmons, Arenas also came out to defend Simmons for wanting out of Philadelphia.
“I like the way he plays the game,” Arenas tells Games with Names hosts Julian Edelman and Sam Morrill.
Arenas added, “He just doesn’t do what he can’t do. If he can’t do it, he’s just not gonna do it. Now I would love playing with a guy who really doesn’t want to shoot like that. A guy who’s just gonna give me the ball the whole time!! Can’t say anything bad about that! I sat there and just watched him and I’m looking at his form, looking at his feet and I’m like ‘what the hell is going on with you, why isn’t it translating to the game?’”
This might be a little extreme at least based on the stat as Arenas claimed Simmons to be a good shooter. In the 2022-23 season, Simmons has had games wherein he has evidently passed the ball in clear-cut opportunities to score.
