“You can’t compare today’s players with players from the 80’s – early 2000’s” – Gilbert Arenas claiming Stephen Curry is ahead of ‘dinosaur-ish’ Larry Bird starts heated debate

Stephen Curry is widely considered to be one of the best players in the game right now – and Gilbert Arenas started a heated debate claiming the star man is much ahead of Larry Bird.

Gilbert Arenas chose to debunk this notion of late, when he included Steph Curry in his list for the top 10 basketball players of all time – and also went on to claim that the Golden State Warriors superstar is better than Larry Bird and should not be compared with “dinosaurs.”

Speaking on Vlad TV, Arenas said that he definitely thinks that Curry has done enough to warrant his inclusion on his list of the top 10 basketball players of all time.

When asked which of the all-time greats of the yesteryears would be taken out of his list to accommodate Curry, Arenas said it is simple for him as he doesn’t include players prior to the 90’s on his list.

Arenas justified his opinion by saying that the skill level in the current NBA is much higher than it used to be before the onset of the new millennium, and therefore he does not believe Curry deserves to be compared to the likes of Larry Bird or Bill Russell – whose style of play Arenas described as “dinosaur-ish.”

Arenas explained: “We’re trying to compare his [Curry] style to a style that is dinosaur-ish, you know what I mean?” The former NBA player added: “So when someone is like, ‘Well, how are you going to leave out like Larry Bird? Easy, easy, easy, like I can do that easy.

Arenas’ comments sparked a massive outrage amongst some fans.

It is safe to say that not everyone agreed with Arenas’ point of view.

While one fan stated “Sports evolve. Every sport evolves. Without Bill Russell there is no Magic Johnson, without Magic there is no Kobe Bryant, without Kobe there is no Steph Curry”, another pointed to the fact that the game was much more physical in the yesteryears than it is now.

Regardless of whether he can be rated in the same ball park with legends of the yesteryears or not, there is no doubt over the fact that Curry has done enough to warrant a place in the conversation for the best player of his generation.
