How much has Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid been fined for courtesy of his D Generation X celebration?
Joel Embiid made quite a few headlines on social media courtesy of his celebration on scoring against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. While it was the home side who came out on top in a 137-133 win courtesy of strong performances from Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid – while heroics from Seth Curry and Kyrie Irving were not enough to help the Nets to an away win.
While Tyrese Maxey racked up 27 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists, Embiid racked up 26 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night. Apart from yet another impressive performance by the league leader on the scoring charts, Embiid also made the headlines courtesy of an offensive celebration that went viral on social media in no time.
On scoring against the Nets from inside the paint, Embiid pulled out a celebration known popularly as the “D Generation X” move to rub it in – which did not go down well with Kevin Durant. The injured Nets star took to Twitter to write: “Trash celebration” and tagged Embiid, who was quick to respond with a video of him doing the celebration captioned with “#SuckIt”.
While the interaction did go viral, the NBA did not think too highly of it – as the governing body fined Embiid $25,000 for the celebration. However, the fine would barely be an impediment to the incredible form that Embiid has been in since the start of last season.
The Philadelphia 76ers center has been in outrageous form since the start of the season.
While Embiid became only the first center to top the scoring charts since Shaquille O’Neal last season, he has continued in a similar vein of form this season. Embiid currently leads the league on the scoring charts again, and averages 33.4 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.
Embiid will hope to keep up his form as he aims to take the Sixers to a Play–Off spot.
