NBA players are often one of the richest athletes in the world courtesy of the significant amount of money they are paid over their playing careers. However, certain players like Shaquille O’Neal do not stop at that and often venture into franchise ownership after their careers – and as it turns out, the former Sacramento Kings co-owner is not the only one of his kind.
Shaq’s fellow Los Angeles Lakers legend and Hall of Famer Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson is one of the potential new owners of the Washington Commanders, as he has joined a group led by Josh Harris. The NFL franchise could be sold in the near future and Johnson would be interested in forming part of the investment group linked with purchasing the Commanders.
As has been reported by ESPN, the Basketball Hall of Famer who is also a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, was involved with the Harris Group which failed to purchase the Denver Broncos, which was instead sold to the Walton-Penner Group. Therefore, it is clear that Johnson has been targeting a move into NFL ownership for a long time and he could now get his chance with the Commanders alongside a co-owner in Josh Harris.
Is this Magic Johnson’s first venture into franchise ownership?
As it turns out, this is not Magic Johnson’s first-ever venture into owning a sports franchise.
Johnson is often regarded as the greatest point guard of all time after he played 13 seasons in the NBA, the best years of which came with the Los Angeles Lakers. However, his claim to fame has not stopped just there as since his retirement, he has invested in other sports teams such as the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, MLS’ Los Angeles FC and MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers.
With a CV like that, it will likely mean good fortune for the Commanders going ahead in case Johnson does end up owning them.
