Jaylen Brown has reacted to the great support in place for Kyrie Irving after the Brooklyn Nets star made his return back to action against the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Brooklyn Nets defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in their latest outing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday night. It was a hard-earned win as the Nets turned the first-half deficit around to secure the win against the Grizzlies, but the game held even more significance as it saw the return of Kyrie Irving following his suspension for his anti-Semitic comments row.
Kyrie Irving found himself in the news for all the wrong reasons since the start of the season. The Nets star found his way into trouble after he posted a tweet promoting a 2018 film known as “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America” – a film infamous for its anti-Semitic tropes and sentiments – and did not apologize or hold himself accountable even after being prompted.
Irving’s inability to strongly deny any anti-Semitic beliefs forced the Nets to suspend the star for five games without pay. The guard was also handed a set of terms by the Nets that he would need to observe if he wanted to return to the court, and Irving has indeed fulfilled all of them to return to the court for the first time since the 1st of November – with a lot of support by his side.
Numerous people showed up outside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to support the return, and Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown commended the people showing up in troops.
The Celtics star commended the support that Irving received on his return to action.
Brown who has previously spoken about the NBPA thinking that the terms handed to Irving for his return were “harsh”, quoted the tweet featuring the support for Irving with “Energy.” However, it turned out that the group who showed up in support of Kyrie was a group of Hebrew Israelites, a community that shares many similar sentiments as portrayed by Irving himself.
It was then when Brown addressed that he did not know of the affiliations of the support group. Brown said: “I was not aware of what group that was outside of Barclays Center tonight. I was celebrating the unification of our people welcoming the return of Kyrie to the court, first glance I thought it was a known fraternity the (C/Que’s) Omega psi phi (step’n) showing support.”
