Joel Embiid has become the latest to comment on his opinion about the Premier League and the use of VAR
The Philadelphia 76ers superstar took to his official Twitter account to come clean about his opinion regarding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, and its controversial performances since the start of the new Premier League season – some of which can be deemed as failures to say the very least about them.
Embiid took to his Twitter account to post his thoughts on the VAR system – an assistant refereeing system designed to cut down the deficiencies in human decision-making and to make match officiating easier.
The 76ers superstar sounded strong and convinced in his short message as he tweeted: “VAR is the worst thing to have happened to football”.
The timing of the tweet suggests that Embiid was talking about the ongoing Manchester United versus Arsenal game in the Premier League at Old Trafford, where a Gabriel Martinelli goal in the first half was disallowed by the VAR for a foul on Christian Eriksen in the build-up to it.
What other calls has VAR got wrong in this season’s Premier League?
The VAR system has been around in football since 2018, and it was only until the 2019/2020 season that the Premier League decided to adopt it.
However, there are quite a few discrepancies in the system which is still rapidly developing till date, and the 2022/23 PL season has had some truly shocking calls made by the VAR.
Another shocking decision helped by the VAR came on the same day as Alexis Mac Allister’s goal for Brighton & Hove Albion was wrongfully chalked off against Leicester City.
Maxwell Cornet’s goal for West Ham was also wrongfully overturned for a foul on Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the build up the previous day, a day that also saw Conor Coady’s goal for Everton against Liverpool be wrongfully disallowed – as well as Virgil van Dijk escaping with only a yellow card from a foul that should have guaranteed a straight red.
