ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski believes Joel Embiid is favourite to win 2022 NBA MVP award
Joel Embiid has been the star of the show in the absence of wantaway star Ben Simmons this season. The Cameroonian has single-handedly led the Philadephia 76ers to No. 3 in the East. His performances have been off the charts and he looks to be one of the contenders for the MVP award this season.
According to ESPN analyst Adrian Wojnarowski , the race for MVP is going to be tight this seaon. With Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo putting up consistent numbers, Embiid will definitely have his work cut out. He spoke on his podcast about Embiid saying: (h/t YouTube)
“Joel Embiid is having the time of his life. Right now he’s probably the MVP of the league. If he continues to play this way and they continue to win, maybe not at the clip they’re at. They’re just knocking on the door of first place, but if they are in the top three or four, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t be, barring him missing an extended period.”
Embiid is set to make his 5th All-Star appearance this season. The 27-year old is averaging 29.1 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting 49.9%. The 76ers have been impressive this season holding a 31-20 record in the West. This season could be pivotal in making a deep run in the NBA Playoffs. Coach Doc Rivers will be hoping to sort out the situation with Ben Simmons, ahead of the February 10 deadline.
What is the future for Ben Simmons?
Everybody knows Simmons wants to leave after being excluded from the team. The Sixers aren’t going to accept any trade without a big money signing in return. One obvious candidate is James Harden, who will be seeing his options elsewhere.
The situation is unwanted for all parties involved. However, Simmons has been one of the best player in the past for the 76ers, but currently his lack of playing time could affect the team. Meanwhile, Embiid has received adequate support with Tobias Harris and Andre Drummond, but the team have dropped few games due to poor offensive performances.
