John Butler has found his next NBA team after he signed a two-way deal with the Portland Trail Blazers recently.
John Butler has found a new NBA franchise for himself after he put pen to paper on a two-way deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. The American basketball player who turned out for the New Orleans Pelicans during the summer was cut loose by the franchise earlier this month, but he has not remained a free agent too long as many teams swooped in for his signature.
John Erik Butler Jr is a 19-year-old young talent who spent the last season at Florida State High School, before going undrafted in the NBA Draft in June. A power forward standing at 7 feet and 1 inch, Butler represented the New Orleans Pelicans during the NBA G League in the summer – but the franchise chose to cut him loose earlier this month before the Trail Blazers picked him.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Butler signed a two-way deal with the Trail Blazers. Charania tweeted: “The Portland Trail Blazers plan to sign former Florida State product John Butler on a two-way NBA contract, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. The 7-foot-1 big man spent summer league and preseason with the Pelicans and now lands a roster spot.”
The Blazers have roped in a few other reinforcements this off-season as well.
This move comes days after the Blazers signed 7-foot center Olivier Sarr to a two-way deal following a preseason in which he played his way onto the roster before injuring his wrist. He is scheduled to be reevaluated later this week. Other than Sarr, the Trail Blazers have also added the likes of Devontae Cacok, Isaiah Miller and Jared Rhoden to their roster.
Their newest signing in Butler, 19, last season played at Florida State where he averaged 5.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as a freshman. He shot 39.3% of his attempted three-pointers, but his imminent switch to the NBA will certainly be the toughest task of his young career yet.
