Kendrick Perkins has named his pick for MVP and it’s not Stephen Curry, Luka Doncic, Joel Embiid or Kevin Durant
In a tweet he posted recently, Kendrick Perkins picked his MVP for this season and it’s not who you’d expect. Perkins snubbed Stephen Curry, Luka Doncic, Joel Embiid and Kevin Durant to pick Ja Morant as his MVP candidate. It’s not that surprising to see Perkins picking Morant as the latter has started the 2022-23 NBA season on a roll.
In the Memphis Grizzlies first four games, Ja Morant has averaged 35.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 7 assists. The Grizzlies own a win-loss record of 3-1 in these games and have outperformed expectations.
With Jaren Jackson Jr. out with injury, many expected the Grizzlies to start the season slowly. But the opposite is what has happened with Ja Morant carrying the Grizzlies on his back. The Grizzlies beat the the Kevin Durant led Brooklyn Nets in a 134-124 upset win.
If the Grizzlies can keep this trend going and beat some of the NBA’s top teams, they might be a dark horse to win it all this year. Any championship hopes they may have will depend solely on Morant’s play this year.
Although Ja Morant has gotten off to a scorching start this season, it’ll be difficult for him to win MVP. The Grizzlies have won 3 out of their 4 games so far but this form will not last forever. Morant will eventually slow down and the Grizzlies will lose more games.
This is inevitable as the Grizzlies will find it hard to outscore their opponents every night. This coupled with the large pool of MVP-caliber players this season will push Morant out of the MVP race.
Although it’s unlikely Ja Morant will win MVP this season, the Memphis Grizzlies will be an exciting team to watch. They may even be a dark horse and shock us all come playoff time.
