Kevin Durant says tanking the team’s season to bring Victor Wembanyama is a smart strategy. He feels franchises need to think about an answer to match the top teams.
Kevin Durant was in conversation with ESPN’s Nick Friedell and discussed how the 2023 season would unfold. Victor Wembanyama is celebrated as the No.1 overall pick in the NBA 2023 Draft. Teams are speculated to drop points in order to land the first Draft pick after the conclusion of this season.
Durant answered the question with utmost sincerity, “Nah, teams have been tanking for a minute. What, you’re going to force them to be competitive? I don’t see a problem with it, because each year there’s only a few teams that can win it anyway. So, the rest of the league is trying to figure out where they are.”
“And that’s pretty smart business if you’re a team and you know you’re not going to be a playoff team or play-in team, you might as well try to play for [the No. 1 pick].” said Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant.
Kevin Durant talks about Victor Wembanyama
Kevin Durant sent his advice towards the franchises finishing last in seasons. He said, “You might as well try to get some of the guys who probably won’t get real rotation minutes if you have a good team, get them some reps and maybe those guys can change their lives as well,”
Even Victor Wembanyama was asked about his opinion on franchises tanking their season to bring him in. He said it was a weird strategy whilst also finding it unreasonable and did not want to think too much about it. Victor even vocalized a few rule changes that the NBA were planning, upon his arrival.
Prior to 2019, the worst team in the league has a 25 percent chance of landing the first pick. However, the rules were changes to 14 percent. Although, the risk is high if a franchise sacrifices its season, will Victor Wembanyama be worth the trouble?
