Kevin Durant posted an ominous warning to the NBA regarding Victor Wembanyama’s imminent arrival to American basketball.
Victor Wembanyama has had the American basketball community in a chokehold ever since landing in the country earlier this month. The 18-year-old Frenchman is a freak of nature from a physical perspective–standing at 7’4″ with a wingspan of nearly 8 feet–but what is really scary about him is his freakish ability on the court at such a tender age.
It was only when Wembanyama played his first-ever game on American soil for Metropolitans 92 against the NBA G-League’s Ignite that it was confirmed that the surrounding hype is as real as it can get. Wembanyama combines his size with a freakish amount of athleticism and agility, blocking and nailing down three-pointers effortlessly – some have even called him “unguardable.”
Naturally, his performance for the Metropolitans 92 caught the attention of the thousands of scouts in attendance – making him the bookies’ favourites to be the number one overall pick in the forthcoming 2022 NBA Draft. The thought of a talent like Wembanyama in the NBA is sure to send shockwaves down the spines of athletes, and that is just what Kevin Durant had to say.
The Brooklyn Nets superstar – reputed for his eye for talent – showered high praise on Wembanyama in a recent interview and also gave an ominous warning to the league.
KD’s warning to the rest of the NBA was in the context of Wembanyama’s arrival.
When asked about the young Frenchman, KD said: “That type of talent and skill just puts a smile on your face if you play basketball. The evolution of the game has taken us this far. We got a 7’5” dude that’s able to do everything on the court. It’s inspiring to a lot of people.”
The sort of physical dominance that Wembanyama showed against Ignite surely sent shockwaves around the NBA, and KD mirrored that feeling when he said “The league’s really in trouble when he comes in.”
The two time NBA champion added: “I want to see how it plays out. Everybody has been excited about his arrival to the league so we’ll see what happens.”
