Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets have pledged to donate $500,000 each after the recent anti-Semitism controversy that the player had to face.
The Brooklyn Nets are in the news, but for all the wrong reasons. After a disastrous start to the season that has seen them lose six of their first seven games and look progressively worse with each passing game, it went from bad to worse after star player Kyrie Irving came out on his social media promoting a film with strong anti-Semitic sentiments – and backed them up too.
The Nets star made the headlines for his social media promotion of the film “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America” – a 2018 film based on a book of the same name published in 2015 that promotes strong anti-Semitic feelings and sentiments. Irving was heavily ripped into by both Brooklyn Nets fans as well as the owner Joe Tsai who came out with a statement.
While Joe Tsai apologized by saying that “it is wrong to promote hate based on race, ethnicity or religion”, the former NBA champion was not to back down from his stance. Even when fans lined up in “Fight Anti-Semitism” shirts on the headlines, Kyrie doubled down on his feelings – mounting up the pressure in the locker room that eventually led to Steve Nash being sacked.
Nash’s sacking has been followed by Irving taking responsibility for the cause. According to a statement he released along with the Nets and the Anti-Defamation League, Irving pledged to donate $500,000 to causes and organizations that work to eradicate hate and intolerance in our communities.” However, the Nets are not out of trouble yet when it comes to the court.
The Nets are in a bit of a puddle seven games into the season.
With the team on a 1-6 streak seven games into the season and the coach being sacked, the Nets are in a bit of trouble. Even though Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have been in good form, their support cast – especially Ben Simmons – has struggled and so has their defensive players.
However, it turns out that Ime Udoka has been chosen as the one to lead the Nets out of this mess. The suspended Boston Celtics coach has been linked with a return to coaching and according to reports, could take up the reins as early as a couple of days.
