Nets unvaccinated guard Kyrie Irving playing at Chase Center San Francisco had mixed reactions, Democrat Mat Haney criticized the decision
As per mandate by the New York State Law, unvaccinated individuals are restricted to access any public places and even attending public gatherings. New York City, San Francisco, and Brooklyn area come under this mandate.
But Brooklyn Nets’ unvaccinated guard Kyrie Irving is said to be playing at Chase Center San Francisco, which caused a lot of stir in public.
San Francisco Democrat and Supervisor Matt Haney said the incident doesn’t seem fair.
“New York has standards that forbid him from playing. Why would we have different set of standards to create exception when our firefighters, our bus drivers, small businesses don’t get exception,” he said.
The visiting Brooklyn Nets played Kyrie Irving against the Warriors, which seemed like completely disregarding the rules. He is still not vaccinated and shouldn’t be allowed to enter the arena. But as per the NBA rule book, an unvaccinated visiting player can still play the game as long as he tests negative for COVID-19.
League Officials explained the rule saying “they must remain at least six feet from members of the public at all times during the event, provide a proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within one day for antigen tests or two days for PCR tests. Prior to entry into the facility or venue and wear a well-fitted mask at all times except while actively performing or playing.“
As per NBA’s escape route, the visiting players are present in the venue only occasionally. This restricts their contact and lowers the risk of any transmission. While the same rule restricts Kyrie to play in the home games, he is very much active on the road.
Kyrie Irving and Brooklyn Nets bending the rule but not breaking them
Brooklyn Nets are eager to win the Championship this season. They seem to go test limits to get their dream fulfilled. They actually sidelined Kyrie from their rotation for not taking Covid Vaccine. But then due to the mid-season Covid-19 outbreak and NBA Safety protocol, they were forced to call him back.
Irving has cleared his intentions of using organic medicines than vaccines as a preventive measure and the franchise seems to be ok with that. While due to NY Mandate, Kyrie is a part-timer in the team, the team is using loopholes in NBA rules and government rules to make the most use of Kyrie’s availability.
