Kyrie Irving’s move to the Dallas Mavericks was secured courtesy of Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai despite competition from the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Kyrie Irving saga came to an end after he handed in a trade request at the Brooklyn Nets over the past week. The star guard who was named as a starter in the 2023 NBA All-star game expressed his decision to leave, after Shams Charania of The Athletic recently reported that the guard has informed the team that he wants to be moved or will leave in free agency.
However, as it turns out, the Brooklyn Nets seem to have found Irving’s next destination after several news reports confirmed that Irving was to be traded to the Dallas Mavericks. According to NBA Insider Shams Charania, Brooklyn Nets are trading Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round and multiple second-round pick.
As it turns out – Irving will be plying his trade at the American Airlines Center soon. However, the Mavericks were not the only team in the West to go for Irving as the Los Angeles Lakers were also interested – however Nets owner Joe Tsai ensured Irving went to the Mavericks.
Although the Los Angeles Lakers were also in the race to secure Kyrie Irving, it has been reported that the Nets owner ensured that the shooting guard goes to Dallas.
According to Mark Stein on his podcast, Nets owner Joe Tsai made it a goal to avoid trading Kyrie Irving to his preferred destination, the Los Angeles Lakers. It was well reported that Irving wanted a reunion with former teammate LeBron James at the Lakers, but Tsai made sure that the want-away superstar did not get what he wanted, and is instead on his way to Dallas now.
The move hugely boosts the Mavericks’ ranks, who are currently sixth in the Western Conference and are without their talisman in Luka Doncic. Mavs fans will hope the Doncic and Irving pairing helps them qualify for the Playoffs – considering the form Irving has been in this season.
