LeBron James is not only one of the best players to ever step on a basketball court, but he is also a personality who wants betterment of society – as seen from his latest tweet supporting a cause.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar took to Twitter to speak out to support a volleyball player who was racially abused while in action for Duke University against Brigham Young University.
Rachel Richardson a young sophomore who plays as an outside hitter for Duke University – was reportedly being subjected to racial slurs every time she served while being in action for her University team against Brigham Young University as the two teams met in Provo, Utah.
The accusation was put in the limelight when Lesa Pamplin, the sophomore’s Godmother took to Twitter to explain her grievances about the situation.
Pamplin, a Fort Worth, Texas attorney took to the social media platform to say that Richardson the only black starter for the Duke University women’s volleyball team – was being repeatedly subjected to racial slurs in the game.
According to Pamplin, the BYU fans were subjecting racial slurs to Richardson every time she served.
The attorney also said that Richardson was threatened by a white male who asked her to watch her back while going back to the bus, if a police officer had to sit at the Duke bench for protectiona truly unfortunate moment for the young volleyball player.
Upon coming across Pamplin’s post, one of the greatest black icons in sport right now came to Richardson’s defense in the form of all-time basketball great LeBron James.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar tweeted: “@LesaPamplin, you tell your Goddaughter to stand tall, be proud and continue to be BLACK!!! We are a brotherhood and sisterhood! We have her back. This is not sports. #striveforgreatness #morethanavolleyballplayer”.
James’ support meant that the situation reached a lot more people, and the right message was sent to the masses racial discrimination is never right and should be condemned.
The BYU has banned the fan since, and also released a statement on Saturday afternoon apologizing to Duke University and its student athletes.
