LeBron James’ extraordinary career has seen him cement himself as one of the all time greats in the game, as well as break a number of records that one thought could never be broken.
Another one of those records in sight for the Los Angeles Lakers superstar is all time basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of having the most top five MVP finishes in NBA history.
The legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who is widely regarded as one of the best players of all time enjoyed a 20 year long career where he turned out for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers winning the NBA Championship and the MVP for a record six times.
Another record that Abdul-Jabbar holds is the record for having the most top five MVP finishes in NBA history with 15 top five MVP finishes out of the 20 seasons that he played.
However, it turns out that LeBron James is closing in on the record with 14 top five finishes in his career already. With a top five finish in the MVP this season, LeBron can tie a record that has stood for over three decades since Abdul-Jabbar hung up his boots in 1989.
The next best on the list are Kobe Bryant and Bill Russell with 11 each, followed by Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain with 10 each meaning there is no imminent risk of anyone joining the pair at the top soon.
Can LeBron go one step further to break the all time record?
It is possible that LeBron goes a step further to break another one of the all-time records.
If the 37-year-old has a stellar season in the upcoming season, he will finish in the top five in the MVP standings and with another year (along with the option of an additional year in his contract) to go on his current contract with the Lakers, the 2023/24 season will be LeBron’s chance to go clear of Abdul-Jabbar on the all-time top five MVP rankings.
