The United States of America men’s national soccer team qualified for the knockout stage of the currently ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The 2026 co-hosts secured their berth in the Round of 16 of this year’s tournament with a 1-0 win over Iran, as a Christian Pulisic first-half goal gave the United States of America the spoils to progress into the business end of the Cup.
After a 1-1 draw against Wales in their first game followed by a hard-fought goalless draw against a stacked England side in their second game, the United States of America went up against a strong Iran side looking for a win to help them qualify into the knockout stage. And a goal from Chelsea star Christian Pulisic did help the USMNT register a 1-0 win to progress.
The Chelsea star scored from close range towards the end of the first half to give the USMNT a much-needed lead, and they held it out until the final whistle to qualify from second place in their group alongside England. Their qualification sparked scenes of celebration as the sports community celebrated their progress, including none other than NBA superstar LeBron James.

Writing on his official Twitter account after the United States men’s soccer team secured their qualification to the next round of the World Cup, LeBron was jubilant as he congratulated the USMNT on their progress. The NBA legend wrote: “@USMNT CONGRATS MEN on advancing!! Keep going!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾” as the USMNT secured their qualification.
The USMNT will go up against the Netherlands in their Round of 16 encounter as they look to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.
