In a press conference held outside the Monterey Park Civic Center on Sunday morning, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna informed the media that his office, along with other local law enforcement agencies and the FBI, is actively looking for the alleged shooter, an Asian male between the ages of 30 and 50.

Five males and five females were among the victims, according to the sheriff. According to the sheriff’s Capt. Andrew Meyer, the mass shooting, one of the deadliest in California in recent memory, occurred about 10:22 p.m. “When authorities arrived on the scene, they saw a large number of people, customers streaming out of the establishment, and yelling. The officers arrived at the scene and discovered more victims,” the Meyer added.

According to Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese, because the shooting occurred so close to the department and because his officers were closing up the Lunar New Year celebration from earlier in the day, they were able to respond right away to 911 calls about the incident. Equality California, in response to the shooting spree that occurred in Monterey Park on Lunar New Year’s Eve, also expressed their grief.
