Michael Jordan established himself amongst the veterans for the USA Team in Barcelona. Magic Johnson shared one of the most enchanting stories from the pilot phase of Michael Jordan’s career.
No NBA fan would forget the players who represented USA in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. They were known as the Dream Team. The team had Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, the sensational Michael Jordan and many more.
Magic Johnson said during a live taping of the show, ALL THE SMOKE. “He’s coming down the right side, he takes off. David Robinson coming this way [left]. So Mike just cups and he just looked at him.”
He said MJ took off for a dunk while poking fun at David Robinson, “And kept looking. Kept looking. He went all the way down, Jack [talking to Stephen Jackson], he did a 360… Bam! I said, ‘that’s it. That’s it. It’s over now.’ So he just looked at me too, and let me know…”
“He said, ‘I just want y’all to know, there’s a new sheriff in town.’ He said, ‘it’s my league now. MJ you had your turn, Larry Bird, you had your turn. Now it’s my league.’ And we all bowed down.”
How did Michael Jordan perform for the USA Team in Barcelona amidst NBA Veterans?
11 out of the 12 players who would the gold medal in Barcelona went on to be a part of NBA’s history. The MLB Hall of Fame. 10 of those names were included to the NBA’s 50 greatest players of all-time list.
The USA Team was matched up against Croatia in the Gold Medal match. They won 117-85. Michael Jordan was the only player who started all the matches at the Olympics. He averaged 14.9 points per game with 2.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists. Only Charles Barkley has a better average than MJ, an 18 point per page average.
